Three former Jet Propulsion Laboratory employees, who revolutionized the field of digital communications, have been awarded the 1992 C&C Prize by NEC Corporation for their pioneering work in developing deep-space digital communications systems.
Dr. Eberhardt Rechtin, Walter K. Victor and Dr. Andrew J. Viterbi designed the digital image transmission system which allowed the Voyager spacecraft to send back the never-before-seen pictures of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune and which contributed to the unveiling of Venus by transmitting the radar images from the Magellan spacecraft.
The C&C Prize is awarded annually by the Foundation for C&C Promotion which has been established by NEC Corporation. The prize recognizes individuals who have distinguished themselves by their outstanding contributions to research and development in the field of semiconductors, computers and communications (C&C), and their integrated technologies.
NEC will honor the 1992 C&C Prize recipients at a formal awards ceremony in Tokyo on Oct. 29.
