Overview
Mission
Our mission is to enhance JPL and NASA's excellence in the understanding of the space environments and its effects. As national leaders in space radiation, it is our duty to share our expertise and knowledge with the community, and to build a stronger community with access to tools and data, available for students, laboratories, universities, and international and national corporations.
Leadership
Dr. Insoo Jun and Gregory Allen have the prestigious honor of being the first acting directors of the JPL Center for Space Radiation. Working with both JPL leadership and radiation subject matter experts, Insoo and Greg helped to architect and implement the Center with support from JPL’s Office of Safety and Mission Success (OSMS).
Dr. Insoo Jun received PhD in Nuclear Engineering (in the field of Applied Plasma Physics and Fusion Technology) from UCLA in 1991. After spending nine years in academia and industry, he joined JPL’s Mission Environments Group in 2000 as a senior technical staff. He has been the group supervisor of the same group, renamed Natural Space Environments group, from 2004 to 2011 and from 2014 to 2020. He serves Co-Lead for JPL’s Center for Space Radiation and concurrently as the Section Chief Technologist and Deputy Technical Fellow for the NASA agency-wide Space Environment Technical Discipline Team (TDT). His main expertise is in the space radiation environments and effects on space systems and planetary bodies. He is currently leading many NASA-funded projects related to space radiation by performing researches on nuclear planetary science and space physics. Furthermore, he serves as science team members for the MSL, Europa, Psyche missions, and Artemis Gateway HERMES.
Greg Allen received a BS in Computer Engineering from CSU Chico in 2005 and joined JPL’s Radiation Effects Group after graduating. A recognized team leader in the Radiation Effects group at JPL as well as the radiation effects community, Greg has provided radiation effects support for dozens of NASA missions and tiger team efforts since 2005, providing flight programs electronic device and system level radiation effects analysis and mitigation strategies. Greg received NASA’s coveted Outstanding Leadership Award, is a Senior IEEE member, and has held many conference positions at the Nuclear Science Radiation Effects Conference and currently sits on the conference Steering Group. In addition to Greg’s responsibilities as the Center for Space Radiation co-lead, he is the Radiation Effects Group Lead and Single Event Effects Test Lead.
