Quantum Hub
Background on The Quantum Hub
NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) are exploring the future applications of quantum technologies and how to integrate low Technology Readiness Level (TRL) technologies into spaceborne applications. To facilitate this, eight universities from California, Arizona, and Colorado, along with three NASA centers, have come together to form a collaborative hub focused on developing a pipeline of quantum experts and assessing the potential of quantum technologies for space applications. To achieve these goals, JPL hosted a workshop to address the following objectives:
- Facilitate the development of undergraduate and graduate-level curricula related to quantum technologies.
- Establish a joint seminar series across participating institutions.
- Create internship opportunities for students across the Hub institutions.
- Identify key facilities and equipment available within the quantum hub network.
- Create a process for fostering partnerships and collaborations to advance quantum technology.
- Assess the expertise of hub members in the field of quantum technology.
- Identify tangible benefits to industry for establishing “Quantum Valley” in Southern California region
Motivation
In response to feedback from the first workshop that was held at JPL (4800 Oak Grove Dr., Pasadena, CA) on January 7th 2025, a second workshop was held at Caltech campus on July 22 and 23, 2025 and is summarized here.
The JPL Quantum Space Innovation Center, along with its Quantum Hub, is intended to foster collaboration in quantum research. These workshops serve as a collective effort to explore how academia, government, and industry can work together to advance quantum sensing for economic competitiveness, national defense, and space exploration, while also strengthening the U.S. research network in quantum technologies.
During the workshop, discussions focused on continuing the following key topics from the first workshop:
- Defining clear collaboration pathways and identifying key challenges.
- Exploring opportunities for joint research and development in quantum sensing for space applications.
- Announcing the availability of funding for summer internships at JPL and other NASA centers, offering students hands-on experience in the field.
- Developing a structured approach for creating proposals and curricula related to spaceborne quantum technologies.
- Fostering information exchange through seminars, personal exchange programs, and JPL flight schools.
The second workshop also included participations from NASA HQ and centers, The Governor’s office of innovation from California and New York, and industry partners (see the participants list below). There were over 100 participants during the two-day workshop.
