Noted oceanographer Jacques Cousteau visited NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory Nov. 16 to exchange ideas with scientists involved in satellite studies of the world's oceans.
During the three hour visit, Cousteau was greeted by JPL Deputy Director Dr. Peter Lyman, Chief Scientist Dr. Moustafa Chahine and Assistant Laboratory Director Dr. Charles Elachi.
Cousteau is undertaking two-year around-the-world oceanography cruise for both scientific and educational purposes, spokesman said. He has long been interested in NASA technology for study of the oceans, particularly satellite studies of the growth of marine phytoplankton.
During his visit, Cousteau heard presentations by scientists involved in JPL's search for other solar-planetary systems and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.
Accompanying Captain Cousteau were Jean-Michel Cousteau; Pamela Stacy, director of Publications for the Cousteau Society; Dr. Jacques Constans, Vice President for Science Technology and International Affairs of the society, and Dr. Richard Murphy, Vice President for Science and Education.
