Irvine School Ranks First in Regional Science Bowl

Students were quizzed on a variety of science questions this past weekend.

Science buffs in training showed off their knowledge Saturday, Jan. 26, at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

JPL played host to the National Science Bowl's regional competition for the 26th year. The event quizzes high school students on a range of scientific topics, including biology, physics, astronomy. The competition is organized by the U.S. Department of Energy.

This year, University High School of Irvine, California, took the top spot; Santa Monica High School ranked second; and Arcadia High School came in third. South Hills High School of West Covina, California, received the Sportsmanship Award.

The Science Bowl encourages students to pursue degrees in fields known as STEM --science, technology, engineering and mathematics. More than 250,000 students have participated in the Science Bowl over the course of its 27-year history.

Now that they've triumphed here in California, University High School students will go on to Washington to compete in the national competition from April 26th to 30th.
