The Sun's Magnetic Field

Jet Propulsion Laboratory https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/ Dec. 16, 2011
This frame from an animation shows how the magnetic field lines emanating from our sun spiral out into the solar system as the sun rotates. NASA's Voyager 1 is in an area scientists are calling the stagnation region, at the outer layer of the heliosphere.

This animation shows how the magnetic field lines emanating from our sun spiral out into the solar system as the sun rotates. To see a schematic of what they look like at the edge of the solar system, see PIA15178.

The Voyager spacecraft were built by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., which continues to operate both. JPL is a division of the California Institute of Technology. The Voyager missions are a part of the NASA Heliophysics System Observatory, sponsored by the Heliophysics Division of the Science Mission Directorate in Washington.
