Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving volume of cylinders, cones, and spheres.

Use volume formulas for cylinders, pyramids, cones, and spheres to solve problems.

Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.

Solve problems involving scale drawings of geometric figures, including computing actual lengths and areas from a scale drawing and reproducing a scale drawing at a different scale.

Know the formulas for the area and circumference of a circle and use them to solve problems; give an informal derivation of the relationship between the circumference and area of a circle.

Know that numbers that are not rational are called irrational. Understand informally that every number has a decimal expansion; for rational numbers show that the decimal expansion repeats eventually, and convert a decimal expansion which repeats eventually into a rational number.

Identify and describe relationships among inscribed angles, radii, and chords.

(+) Understand and apply the Law of Sines and the Law of Cosines to find unknown measurements in right and non-right triangles (e.g., surveying problems, resultant forces).

Define trigonometric ratios and solve problems involving right triangles

Pi in the Sky 2 Infographic and Math Challenge

Overview

This visual math problem set, created by JPL education specialists with the help of scientists and engineers, gives students a chance to try using the mathematical constant pi on some of the real calculations space explorers use every day. Use it as a handout or poster to give learners of all kinds -- and especially visual learners -- a chance to see some of the exciting, real-world applications of the math they're learning in school.
