Collaboration in Research Between Academic Institutions and JPL
Strategic University Research Partnerships (SURP)
JPL has formal strategic partnerships with 14 universities that have major commitments to space exploration, and broad connections to JPL. The Strategic University Research Partnerships (SURP) program supports these partnerships, providing resources to foster strong collaborative relationships. The program works with JPL researchers and our strategic partners to develop new science and technology opportunities and provide accelerated innovation for NASA’s missions.
Center for Academic Partnerships (CAP)
CAP seeks to catalyze relationships between the academic community and JPL, leveraging opportunities to strengthen our ties with academia. CAP creates opportunities for faculty and their students to visit JPL, and for JPL researchers to visit academic institutions. CAP also supports engagement of JPL researchers in classes at academic institutions.
Research with Caltech
JPL was founded in 1936 by Caltech rocket scientists. Today, Caltech manages the lab for NASA, continuing this close connection. Research programs dedicated to the JPL-Caltech enterprise aim to build and strengthen collaborative connections with a long-term impact in areas relevant to NASA/JPL in the fields of Earth and Space Science, and Technology.
Research and Technology Development (R&TD)
The Research and Technology Development (R&TD) program has the purpose of enhancing JPL's ability to address future missions and objectives and to propel JPL into new research leadership roles. The program will support research in areas consistent with JPL's strategic direction and long-term vision. R&TD has three established programs—Innovative Spontaneous Concepts (ISC), Topic Areas (TRTD), and Strategic Initiatives (SRTD).
Visiting Researcher Programs
JPL is proud of its long record of mutually beneficial partnerships with universities and continually seeks to work with faculty and the next generation of scientists and engineers to ensure JPL's continuing successful contribution to NASA's missions. Through the Distinguished Visiting Scholar Programs, JPL hosts a variety of collaborators from academia. We value our relationships with the external research community and view our academic collaborators as a critical part of our community. Learn more about these programs
JPL University Crowdsourcing Initiative (JUCI)
JUCI is JPL’s university crowdsourcing mechanism designed to guide student teams toward the accomplishment of JPL challenges with no exchange of funds. JPL provides the challenges, the professor led student teams perform the work.
