Benjamin Nuernberger

User Interface Developer

benjamin.nuernberger@jpl.nasa.gov

About

Bio

Dr. Nuernberger received a B.S. degree in Computer Science from the University of California, Los Angeles, CA, USA, in 2010, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara, CA, USA, in 2016 and 2018, respectively. During graduate school, he experimented with various XR technologies in the Four Eyes Lab under the direction of Professors Matthew Turk and Tobias Höllerer, and worked on a variety of projects ranging from structure from motion and segmentation in computer vision to human computer interaction in XR.

Currently at NASA JPL, Nuernberger has worked in a variety of both research and development roles with a focus on interactive 3D visualization, augmented and virtual reality, robotics operations interfaces, and the application of generative AI to enhancing enterprise and engineering practices at JPL. Nuernberger's work has included camera pose estimation, camera model conversion, object pose estimation, novel 3D user interfaces, technical lead of the award-winning ProtoSpace AR CAD visualization system, the first VR spacecraft magnetic field visualization, robotics operations interfaces, enterprise metaverse, retrieval augmented generation (RAG), and automated engineering document analysis and authoring.

Dr. Nuernberger has supported a variety of projects, including MSR, NISAR, EELS, CADRE, and others. Dr. Nuernberger has been the recipient of numerous awards, publications, and patents. He has also had the privilege of having worked with highly talented cross-functional teams and of serving a variety of end users, including astronauts, engineers, scientists, roboticists, and technologists.
