On October 13, 1998, several groups of children from the Boys & Girls Clubs of America came together at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida to pledge their goals for the future, to meet space scientists, and to create a a time capsule. The children, ages 8 through 13, came from the Lakeland, Martin County, and Palm Beach County clubs . They represented Boys & Girls Clubs across the country, many of which had participated in the recent "Countdown to Deep Space 1" activity.

Besides having the opportunity to spend time with scientists on a one-on-one basis, the children dipped their hands in paint and stamped them down beside the handprint of the scientist as a symbol of their pledge to accomplish their goals.

The time capsule created by the children will be displayed at JPL in California. It will be opened 50 years from the event on October13, 2048.
