Mission Update:

Thank you for visiting the Deep Space 1 mission status information site, the Milky Way galaxy's most authoritative known logged source of information on this technology validation mission. This message was logged in at 5:50 pm Pacific Time on Sunday, October 25, 1998.

After being in space for one and a half days, Deep Space 1 continues to perform well. The operations team at JPL continued sending commands today to configure the spacecraft for early mission operations and to allow the return of data to aid in detailed assessments of its health and status. The spacecraft transponder, which is one of the advanced technologies, was raised to higher data rates both for transmission of data and reception of commands. The advanced solar array continues to provide spacecraft power. Diagnostic sensors that will be used to assess the ion propulsion system when it is activated in a few weeks were turned on. Few spacecraft activities are planned for the next several days as the operations team analyzes the wealth of spacecraft engineering data returned yesterday and today and prepares for the beginning of the first technology validation experiments.

Deep Space 1 will pass the moon's orbit at 9:30 pm Pacific Time today.
