Norman R. Haynes has been named manager of the Systems Division of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Norman R. Haynes has been named manager of the Systems Division of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Haynes, 43, replaces Dr. C.R. Gates, who recently became deputy assistant laboratory director for technical divisions. The appointment, effective June 2, was announced by Dr. Bruce Murray, JPL director.

A JPL employee for 2l years, Haynes received his bachelor of science degree in aeronautical engineering from Purdue University in 1959 and his master of science degree from the University of Southern California in 1961.

Most recently he has been science and mission design manager for the Galileo Project, the proposed follow on mission to the Voyager Jupiter exploration. Previously he served as space program development manager after decade of engineering and systems analysis work on Mariner missions to Mars.

Haynes is married and has four children. They reside at 1220 Tropical Ave., Pasadena.

Caltech operates JPL for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
