The Jet Propulsion Laboratory has been recognized for its more than 25 years of accomplishments in the field of planetary imaging science by the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE).
JPL will receive the 1989 SPIE Technology Achievement Award during the society's annual banquet on Wednesday, August 9, at the San Diego Marriott Hotel. JPL's director, Dr. Lew Allen, will be on hand to accept the award.
Prior to the award ceremony, retrospective will be presented that celebrates achievements in planetary exploration during the past 30 years. The program, "Man's Exploration of the Solar System through the Imaging Sciences," is sponsored by SPIE, JPL and the Planetary Society.
SPIE -- The International Society for Optical Engineering -- is nonprofit society dedicated to advancing engineering and scientific applications of optical and optoelectronic research and technology. The society is made up of more than 9,000 applied scientists and engineers and supporting organizations active in government, science, education, industry and medicine.
