Citing "an expression of our mutual intent to increase our common interests," Dr. Lew Allen, director of the NASA/Caltech Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Tuesday (May 9) formalized set of agreements with seven of the nation's Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU's).

The agreement provides for joint research projects, exchanges at the faculty/staff level, student summer employment, and other cooperative programs to develop and utilize the scientific and technical talent pool in HBCU's. JPL already employs more than 30 alumni of these colleges.

Participating in the ceremony were Dr. Charles Meredith, Chancellor of the Atlanta University Center, Dr. Om Puri of Clark Atlanta University, Dr. Art Jones of Morehouse College, Dr. Gary McGaha of Morehouse School of Medicine, Dr Leroy Frazier of Morris Brown College, Mr. J. Edward Easler of Tuskegee University, and Dr. James Hefner, President, and Dr. Leslie McLemore of Jackson State University. Spelman College is also party to the agreements.

JPL's HBCU collaboration program, which is managed by Dr. Martin Leopold and administered by Paul Forte, has been underway informally for about year.
