Modern-Day Angkor
4 aerial views of covered area that was Angkor Modern-Day Angkor

Uncovering Angkor's ruins has been a challenge for archaeologists, since the region is covered with vegetation and frequently obscured by low clouds. Scientists from Australia, Cambodia and France worked for many years to integrate information from hand-drawn maps, ground surveys, airborne photography and NASA ground-sensing radar.

Ancient Angkor's more visible remnants include: occupation mounds and ponds (upper left), canals (upper right), roadways and canals (lower left) and a classic "village temple" (lower right).
