Lecture Series

General Information

JPL’s Theodore von Kármán Lecture Series, presented by the Communications and Education Directorate, aims to bring the excitement of JPL’s missions, instruments and other technologies to an audience of both JPL employees and the general public. The von Kármán series is a completely virtual event, taking place once per month, while being recorded for you to enjoy at any time.

Lecture Series

June 22 - The Universe of Very Cold: The James Webb Space Telescope, MIRI, and the Cryocooler

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) takes incredible images using infrared light. The optics and science instruments must be incredibly cold, especially JWST’s Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI), which needs to be at a temperature of less than 7 kelvins, or -447 F. This is not possible without the Cryocooler, which keeps MIRI’s detectors cool.
