Slice of History - IRAS at the Vandenberg Inn
In January 1983, scientists, engineers, and media representatives gathered at California’s Vandenberg Inn ahead of the launch of the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS)— a mission that would fundamentally change how humanity observes the universe. The conference marked the launch of an ambitious international effort between NASA, the Netherlands Agency for Aerospace Programmes, and the United Kingdom’s Science and Engineering Research Council to operate the world’s first infrared space telescope.
At the time, infrared astronomy remained largely unexplored. Much of infrared light is blocked by Earth’s atmosphere, making it difficult or impossible to study from ground-based observatories. IRAS was designed to overcome that limitation by surveying the sky from space, revealing celestial objects and structures invisible to traditional optical telescopes.
What followed was a scientific breakthrough. During its mission, IRAS detected roughly 350,000 infrared sources, increasing the number of known astronomical objects by nearly 70 percent. The observatory discovered six new comets and uncovered evidence of dust disks surrounding the stars Vega and Fomalhaut — one of the earliest indications that planetary systems might exist around other stars. By detecting infrared light capable of penetrating dense clouds of dust and gas, IRAS also peered deeper into the center of the Milky Way than any previous observatory.
The mission’s influence extended far beyond its operational lifetime. IRAS demonstrated that the infrared universe was rich, dynamic, and filled with previously hidden phenomena, laying the technical and scientific groundwork for future observatories. Missions such as the Spitzer Space Telescope, James Webb Space Telescope, the Infrared Space Observatory, and the Herschel observatory all built upon the foundation IRAS established.
Today, IRAS is remembered not only as a pioneering telescope, but as the mission that opened an entirely new window onto the cosmos. What began with a launch conference on California’s Central Coast became the start of a new era in astronomy — one that transformed invisible light into discovery and reshaped our understanding of the universe.
