Engineers unload ground support equipment for a June engineering test flight above Kauai, Hawaii. The test flight is part of NASA's Low-Density Supersonic Decelerator (LDSD) project, which is investigating cutting-edge landing technologies that could fly on future Mars missions.
In this image, a plane is delivering the test device and related cargo to the U.S. Navy's Pacific Missile Range Facility in Kauai. The first launch window begins the morning of June 3.
The Low-Density Supersonic Decelerator Project is managed by JPL for NASA's Space Technology Mission Directorate in Washington.
