Workshop
Educator Workshop (In Person) – ASTHROS Mission
When:
Saturday, September 14, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. PDT (1 p.m. to 3 p.m. EDT)Where:
Von Karman Auditorium, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, CaliforniaTarget Audience:
Educators for grades 2-12Overview:
This in-person workshop for educators will take place at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, and will highlight NASA's ASTHROS mission. ASTHROS is a long-duration, high altitude balloon designed to provide new information about stellar feedback in the Milky Way and other galaxies, a process in which stars either accelerate or decelerate the formation of new stars in their galaxy. We will hear from Jose Siles, project manager for the mission, and learn how you can incorporate the science and engineering of this mission into your classroom with NGSS-aligned lessons. Plus, learn how your students will have the opportunity to be a part of virtual launch activities happening from Antarctica!
Educators can register by filling out the form below. Note that if you've already registered through the AAA STEM Program, you do not need to register again here.
Educator Guides
- Lesson
Make a Planetary Exploration Balloon
In this engineering challenge, students must stay within design limitations while creating a balloon and gondola system that can descend or ascend at a given rate or maintain its altitude.
Subject Engineering
Grades 3-12
Time 30-60 mins
- Lesson
Science of Color
Quickly and easily model how colors reflect, absorb, and interact with each other in the classroom or online using your computer’s camera.
Subject Science
Grades 2-8
Time 30-60 mins
- Lesson
Modeling Weather Patterns and the Coriolis Effect
Students learn about and model weather patterns that make Antarctica ideal for scientific balloon exploration.
Subject Science
Grades 3-8
Time 30-60 mins
- Lesson
Using Light to Study Planets
Students build a spectrometer using basic materials as a model for how NASA uses spectroscopy to determine the nature of elements found on Earth and other planets.
