Missions to Asteroids, or Missions Observing Asteroids En Route to Another Destination:
(Unless otherwise noted, JPL manages the following missions for NASA.)

Future:
artist's concept of Dawn Dawn
A competitively selected mission under NASA's Discovery Program, Dawn will orbit Vesta and Ceres, two of the largest asteroids in the solar system.

Past:
Galileo Galileo
En route to Jupiter, the Galileo spacecraft flew past asteroid Gaspra in 1991 and in 1993 discovered Dactyl, the first known moon of an asteroid, in this case Ida.
Launch Date:  October 18, 1989
Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR) Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR)
The NEAR spacecraft, managed by Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Lab, conducted the first long-term, close-up study of an asteroid. After completing its main objectives, the craft, guided by JPL's navigation team, made a historic controlled descent onto Eros.
Launch Date:  February 17, 1996
Touchdown on Eros:  February 12, 2001

artist's concept of Deep Space 1 Deep Space 1
Deep Space 1, a spacecraft built to test new technologies in space, flew past asteroid 9969 Braille during its mission. Its primary mission complete, the craft had a successful flyby of Comet Borrelly in September 2001, taking the best pictures ever of a comet's nucleus.
Launch date:  Oct. 24, 1998
9969 Braille Flyby:  July 29, 1999
Comet Borrelly Flyby:  Sept. 22, 2001
