Viking on Mars:
30th Anniversary
July 2006
In 1976, NASA's Viking Mission to Mars was the first to successfully land on the red planet. Viking 1 was launched Aug. 20, 1975, and its lander touched down on July 20, 1976, at Chryse Planitia. Viking 2 was launched Sept. 9, 1975, and its lander reached Utopia Planitia on Sept. 3, 1976.
