JPL WINS SMALL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION AWARD

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory has been named winner of the U.S. Small Business Administration's Dwight D. Eisenhower Award for excellence in the use of small businesses as subcontractors.

The federal agency said JPL has been judged to be "the most outstanding" of all research and development organizations in the Small Business Administration's portfolio of 2,500 large contractors.

JPL Director Dr. Edward C. Stone will accept the award May 2 at the Small Business Procurement Conference in Arlington, VA.

The award was instituted to recognize large prime contractors that have excelled in their use of small businesses as subcontractors. JPL has led an aggressive program designed to give small disadvantaged businesses the maximum opportunity to compete for contracts, said Thomas May, manager of JPL's Business Opportunities Office.

A total of $62.6 million was disbursed to small business subcontractors during 1995, and despite an uncertain business environment, a total of $52 million was allocated for fiscal 1996, May said.
