FORMER JPL DIRECTOR TO RECEIVE PRESTIGIOUS GODDARD AWARD

Former Jet Propulsion Laboratory Director Dr. Lew Allen will receive the 1995 Goddard Astronautics Award at the annual American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Global Air and Space Conference, to be held May 2-4 at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City, Arlington, Va.

Allen, who served as director of the Laboratory from 1982-1990, is currently chairman of the board of the Charles Stark Draper Laboratory in Boston, Mass. He will be honored for his distinguished contributions to the nation's advancement in space and aeronautics and for his leadership of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

The Goddard Astronautics Award is the oldest tribute by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics for notable achievement in the field of astronautics. The award is named in honor of Robert H. Goddard, the visionary rocket pioneer whose early liquid rocket engine launches opened up the world of astronautics.

The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics is the largest professional technical society and the principal voice of American engineers and scientists in the fields of aviation and space exploration.
