NASA and the California Institute of Technology have signed a new five-year contract for management of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the space agency's lead center for solar system exploration.

JPL designed and built the new Wide Field and Planetary Camera-II for NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. The Laboratory manages such missions as Galileo to Jupiter and Magellan to Venus, as well as the U.S. portion of the Ulysses mission to the sun and the Topex/Poseidon oceanographic mission.

Some 7,300 employees and contractors work at JPL's main facility near Pasadena, California, and at other locations. Caltech has managed JPL for NASA since the space agency's inception in 1958.
