Malvin L. Yeater has been appointed assistant laboratory director for Technology and Applications Programs by JPL Director Dr. Edward C. Stone.
Yeater will head the JPL office that manages the NASA technology program as well as work done for agencies other than NASA, including the Defense Department, the Department of Energy, Federal Aviation Administration, U.S. Forest Service, the Environmental Protection Agency and the state of California Department of Commerce. Since 1987 Yeater has served as deputy assistant laboratory director for the same office.
He joined the Laboratory in 1964 and has held a number of senior engineering and management positions over the years. Yeater was project manager of the All-Source Analysis System/Enemy Situation Correlation Element (ASAS/ENSCE) Project (1984-1987); deputy project manager of the ASAS/ENSCE Project (1982-1984); program manager for Tracking and Data Acquisition Networks Consolidation Program (1979-1982); deputy office manager for Tracking and Data Acquisition Engineering (1975-1979); section manager for the Mission Computing and Control Center (MCCC) Data Systems Engineering (1972-1975); system engineer for MCCC (1970-1972); and project engineer for the Multi-Mission Telemetry System of the Deep Space Network.
Prior to joining JPL, Yeater was a design engineer and technical group supervisor at the Douglas Aircraft Corp., in Santa Monica, Calif. He also served as an electronics engineer in the U.S. Navy.
Yeater received a B.S. in electrical engineering from the University of California at Berkeley in 1960, and an M.S. in electrical engineering from California State University, Long Beach in 1968. He has participated in the NASA Senior Executive Program at Wallops Island, Va. Yeater also received a Certificate of Advanced Management from the University of Chicago and completed the Executive Program in Business Management at the University of California at Los Angeles Graduate School of Management.
He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association, the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and the JPL/Caltech Management Club.
Yeater was born on Oct. 22, 1931, in Morley, Iowa. He lives in Tujunga, Calif. and is married to Gladys Yeater. They have two children, Andrew Karl Yeater and Ann Kathleen Rodriguez.
