       Dr. Frank Jordan has been named manager of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Systems Division, succeeding Norman Haynes, JPL Director Dr. Lew Allen announced.

       Jordan had been deputy manager of the Systems Division under Haynes since 1984. Haynes was recently appointed to head the Voyager Project.

       Jordan joined JPL in 1966 after receiving Ph.D. in Engineering Mechanics from University of Texas. He first worked on the technical staff in the Tracking and Orbit Determination Section, and subsequently in electric propulsion mission analysis and on the Mariner 9 navigation team, and later on Mariner 9's celestial mechanics team.

       Jordan also is currently study manager of QUASAT (Quasar Satellite) Phase A, an astronomical investigation, co- investigator of Space VLBI (very long baseline interferometry) using the NASA tracking Data Relay Satellite System, and NASA Committee Representative/Deputy Chairman, Intragency Consultative Group on Space-VLBI.

       He is member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). He was awarded NASA Fellowship in 1965, the NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal in 1983, the Magellanic Premium of the American Philosophical Society, 1984, and the Captain P.V.H. Weems Award of the Institute of Navigation in 1985.

       Jordan and his wife, Joan, also JPL employe, reside in La Canada, Calif., with their two sons, Marc, 15, and Evan, 11.
