This composite image reveals surface details of the quarry of NASA's Deep Impact mission - comet 9P/Tempel 1. Discovered on April 3, 1867 by Ernst Wilhelm Leberecht Tempel of Marseilles, France, it is half the size of Manhattan Island, New York. But the true shape and surface features of Tempel 1 would remain hidden for 138 years -- when the first images of the nucleus were beamed down from Deep Impact just hours before it July 4, 2005, impact.
