A River Runs Through It: Gotel Mountains, Nigeria and Cameroon

River drainage patterns provide clues to rock types and erosion processes involved in landscape evolution. In the Gotel Mountains, lowlands are composed of thick, uniform, relatively soft rocks or sediments. The randomness of river patterns there indicates stream erosion is the only significant dynamic process altering the landscape. Neighboring highlands are made of hard, erosion-resistant rocks that cracked to form zones of weakness.
