Before the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission, high-quality satellite imagery of Central America was difficult to obtain due to persistent cloud cover. The mission's ability to penetrate clouds and make 3-D measurements allowed scientists to generate the first complete high-resolution topographic map of the entire region. Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, southern Mexico and parts of Cuba and Jamaica are visible.
