This artist's impression depicts settled areas in and around the Angkor Wat temple complex. While certain elements of Angkor, such as the temple of Angkor Wat, were never entirely abandoned, the new maps present compelling signs that the large-scale city engineered its own downfall by overexploiting its landscape.
Further studies will continue to investigate the degree to which the city's water management network and urban expansion contributed to its decline.
