Dr. Michael Meyer
Lead Scientist for NASA's Mars Exploration Program

Michael Meyer is NASA's lead scientist for Mars exploration and also the agency's program scientist for the Mars Science Laboratory rover mission in development for a 2009 launch. He has previously worked as the senior scientist for astrobiology and the NASA planetary protection officer, responsible for compliance with policies concerning forward and back contamination during planetary exploration. Meyer's research has focused on microorganisms living in extreme environments. He has conducted field research in Antarctica, Mongolia , Siberia and the Canadian Arctic. He earned his Ph.D.and master's degrees in oceanography from Texas A&M University , College Station , and his bachelor's degree in biology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy , N.Y.
