Dr. Michael Malin
Principal Investigator for the Mars Orbiter Camera on NASA's Mars Global Surveyor

Michael Malin is the principal investigator for the Mars Orbiter Camera on NASA's Mars Global Surveyor. A scientist who was selected for a McArthur Foundation "genius" grant in 1987, Malin is founder and president of the company that supplied and operates the highest resolution camera currently examining Mars. He is also principal investigator for cameras on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter currently flying to Mars and on the Mars Science Laboratory advanced rover in development for launch in 2009. He earned his Ph.D. in planetary sciences and geology from the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena , after an undergraduate degree in physics from the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to forming his own company, he had been a technical staff member at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena , and a professor of geology at Arizona State University , Tempe.
