Emergency vehicles may travel more safely through intersections with the help of a new traffic technology based on system engineering for spacecraft.

Now being tested in Monrovia, California, the system warns motorists near traffic intersections of rapidly approaching emergency vehicles. Transponders within the emergency vehicles communicate via microwave to receivers on large visual displays above the intersection.
