A new forest fire mapping system, based on JPL's digital image processing used to enhance images of planets taken by spacecraft, is used by the U.S. Forest Service. The infrared remote sensing system, called Firefly, uses space-based Global Positioning System satellites for more accurate mapping and transmits processed data directly to the fire incident camps for computer plotting on maps.
