To correct errors in signals coming back from the Mariner spacecraft, engineers developed error-correcting codes. Years later, this software is incorporated into cellular phones to allow more users on a given line to have a clearer signal. It is also used to reduce 'noise' that can distort pictures and sounds of television signals coming from satellites.
