The Two Micron All-Sky Survey begins operations, using two 1.3-meter (51-inch) telescopes in Arizona and Chile for a near-infrared survey of the entire sky. As of 2002, data is still processing at JPL's Infrared Processing and Analysis Center at Caltech.
