Voyager 2 makes its closest approach to Jupiter,
coming within 570,000 kilometers (350,000 miles) of the planet.
Its encounter begins in late April and continues into August. Together,
Voyagers 1 and 2 take more than 33,000 pictures of Jupiter and its
five major satellites.
Perhaps the greatest surprise of the Voyagers
at Jupiter is the discovery of active volcanism on the moon Io.
It is the first time active volcanoes are observed on another body
in the solar system.
