Launching aboard the space shuttle, the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission circles Earth for 11 days. With its radars sweeping most of the land surfaces of Earth, the mission acquires enough data during its flight to obtain the most complete near-global high-resolution database of the Earth's topography.

The data is still being processed in 2002.
