TELEPHONE (818) 354-5011 http://www.jpl.nasa.gov IMAGE CAPTION P-49593bc February 12, 1998 Sman Teng Temple/AIRSAR This pair of images show a newly discovered temple found approximately 30 kilometers (18 miles) to the northwest of the main temple complex at Angkor in Cambodia. The images were created with data from NASA's Airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (AIRSAR). The image on the left is a false-color radar image, while the image on the right shows topography data made while AIRSAR was being flown in its interferometric mode. The forest appears in yellow tones on the left image; cleared areas around the temple appear blue. To the right is a blue rectangle, a tank or reservoir. Two pink spots between the temple and the tank are 'libraries,' a layout also seen at Angkor Wat. On the topography image (right), the cleared areas are lower than the forested areas and also lower than the temple. The temple appears bright pink and yellow on this image, and is 15 meters (45 feet) high. Due to the presence of Khmer Rouge troops, ground verification and dating of this temple have not yet been completed. However, the headman in a nearby village confirmed its existence and name, Sman Teng, which refers to one of the 200 types of rice in Cambodia. The area shown in each image is 1.25 kilometers square (0.7 miles square). These data were collected on December 6, 1996 as part of AIRSAR's mission to the Pacific Rim. The AIRSAR instrument flies onboard a NASA DC-8 aircraft. #####
