The new Mars screen saver is available today for use with Windows 3.1, Windows '95 and Macintosh formats and is free to download from JPL's Mars home page at http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/mars/ or from Berkeley Systems, Inc., at http://www.berksys.com This scene is a photograph of Valles Marineris, a huge canyon on Mars which stretches about 3,000 miles across the red planet or, roughly, clear across the continental United States. The screen saver includes other dramatic scenes of some geologically intriguing regions on Mars, and a sequence which shows how a small rover onboard a lander/rover mission known as Mars Pathfinder can navigate on the surface, exploring rocks and soil. The images used in the screen saver were rendered on a CRAY T3D parallel supercomputer as part of JPL's Supercomputing Project. The project was a joint effort of JPL and Berkeley Systems, Inc. #####
