Missile Development
researchers took a break during their rocket engine experiments in 1936

Before the launch of Explorer 1 in 1958, most of JPL's work involved rocket and missile development for the U.S. Army during World War II. Missiles developed by JPL included the large Corporal, which overshadowed a model of the much smaller Private beneath it.
