Venus, colored to show elevation
Venus Colorful Venus
Is Venus really this colorful? No! Scientists added colors to help see the planet's different elevations, or heights. Blue shows lower areas of elevation. Orange shows higher elevations.
 
The clouds and atmosphere around Venus are so thick that we cannot see the surface without special instruments. In this image, scientists used radar to see through the clouds. Most of the information in this image is from the Magellan spacecraft, which orbited Venus from 1990 to 1994.
