Open to students in grades 5 through 12, this essay contest is designed to get students thinking like a scientist. Participants must choose one of three scientific observations taken by the Cassini spacecraft at Saturn and write an essay explaining why their choice will produce the best findings.

This national academic competition tests high school teams' knowledge of ocean science topics as well as ocean history and literature. The Los Angeles regional competition is held at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. Congratulations to the 2014 winner, Arcadia High School of Arcadia, Calif.

FIRST Robotics Competition - Los Angeles Regional

FIRST Robotics is a national engineering contest for high school students. Teaming up with engineers from businesses, universities and research institutions, students receive a box-of-parts and have six weeks to design, construct and test a robot to compete in a spirited, no-holds-barred tournament complete with time clocks, referees and cheerleaders. The Los Angeles regional competition is held at the Long Beach Arena.

JPL Invention Challenge

The goal of this friendly, yet challenging competition is to show students that math, science and engineering can be fun. The annual competition is held at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., and open to JPL employees and contractors, their family members, and students from local middle and high schools. Each year, a different engineering challenge is selected.

National Science Bowl® - JPL Los Angeles Regional

This national academic competition challenges high school teams to put their science skills to the test with questions about chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics and astronomy. JPL hosts a regional qualifier in Pasadena, Calif. Twenty-four teams from local high schools have the chance to compete at JPL, and the winning team earns a spot at the National Science Bowl finals in Washington, DC.
