Scientist studies Antarctic ice sheet.
Antarctica is one of the last places on Earth to be explored. In the past few years, JPL scientists working in conjunction with university researchers have taken a closer look at the frozen land to understand how it works.

Missions & Research:

Antarctic Ice Borehole Project Antarctic Ice Borehole Project
JPL and Caltech scientists have drilled deep into the West Antarctic ice sheet, which holds a potential treasure trove of information relating to the frozen continent's geologic history and to the mechanisms by which ice flows from there to the ocean.
Antarctic Mapping Mission Antarctic Mapping Mission
In 1997, the Antarctic Mapping Mission created the first high-resolution radar satellite map of the continent. The second phase of the mission, completed in November 2000, once again charted Antarctica and shows how the continent has changed over the past three years.

Global Positioning Satellites have been installed on bedrock sites in Antarctica to measure the horizontal and vertical motions of the continent. This information will help scientists understand the waxing and waning of the great continental ice sheet, which in turn will help to predict future changes in the ice sheet.
